Knighton Cattle Market

Back in 2023 my wife and I spent a week in the Welsh town of Knighton, a small town on the Welsh Border not far from Hereford. It’s a nice town to wander around. The countryside roundabout provides some excellent walking. Offa’s Dyke passes through the town. The town has a station (which is actually in England!), unfortunately there are not many trains a day.

While we were there, I noticed there was a Cattle Market. We decided to pay it a visit. The photos on this page were taken during that visit. We spent a very pleasant hour there, dodging the poo and putting up with the smell. It was a great place to take photos.

While we were there the auctioneer started selling the sheep, as shown in the photos below. It would have been nice to see the cattle being sold, unfortunately the smell drove us away.

If you are in need a bevvy while you’re there, Watsons Ale House is well worth a visit. It’s a micropub that’s been in the Camra’s Good Beer Guild for several years. We had several sessions there (our holiday cottage was just round the corner).

Around twenty minutes away is the small town of Clun. You need a car to get there, there are no buses. The main reason to go there is the White Horse Inn, this is an excellent pub (also in the Good Beer Guide), home to the Clun Brewery. Whenever we visited the beer was excellent and the food looked and smelt amazing. The pub also has rooms to stay in.
