Our Garden Fence Over the Years

Back in 2009, someone bought the house to our left and rebuilt it, gutting it in the process. At the time, Polly and I were at home all day, so we had to suffer several months of noisy building work. The new owners and the people doing the work never spoke to us; they ignored us. The builders damaged our house, causing several thousand pounds worth of damage. We had to sue them and the neighbour for the damage. We eventually won.

It was not a good time for us.

Luckily, the new owner left a few years later. Since then we’ve had excellent neighbours next door.

When I moved into the house, the fence between our two properties was a low chain-link fence. After all the building work, we decided we needed a bigger fence between our properties. We didn’t want to see the neighbours. So I built one; you can see it in the photo above.

During the teens, we remodelled our back garden. I built new raised beds along the fence, as shown above (photo taken by my wife, Polly).

When I built them, I didn’t seal them properly. Late last year, we discovered the fence was rotting away and would soon collapse, as shown below. Because I hadn’t sealed the raised bed properly, the fence was continually soaked. Even in the summer when it was dry, Polly was always watering the garden. Lesson learnt.

Yesterday and today, the old fence was removed and replaced with a new one, as shown in the photo below.

Polly now has a lot of work to do on that part of the garden; she tells me she has plans, big plans. I’ll be taking photos of the work as it progresses, for my journal. This time next year, there’ll be plants all along the fence. Lots of colour when they are in bloom.
