Long Walks Are No Longer Possible
14th June 2025
The other day I dropped the car off at the garage in Linthwaite, for repairs.
To get home I decided to walk along the canal towpath, a distance of four/five miles. It’s a lovely walk through the countryside. It passes through Slaithwaite, where I took the above photo.
Five miles is about my limit now; I was knackered after the walk.
Back in my teens/early twenties I would think nothing of walking 20/30 miles with a 30lb rucksack on my back. Back then I was into back-packing, camping wild in the hills and mountains of England and Wales. I did a few mountain marathons. I did the three peaks in North Yorkshire in six hours seven minutes. I was very, very fit back then.
When I moved here, I could walk for three/four hours in the hills around Marsden, covering 10/15 miles.
Now, five miles is about the limit.
