Castlefield Viaduct, Manchester
19th June 2025
Sometime ago I came across the Castlefield Viaduct in Central Manchester. It’s an old viaduct that used to bring the railway into Manchester Central station. The station closed in 1969 when the viaduct became derelict. Some years ago, the National Trust converted part of it into an Urban Park, full of plants. Today I finally got round to visiting it, and took loads of photos, some of them are on this page.
The viaduct is grade two listed.
If you are in Manchester, it’s well worth a visit as are the nearby canals and the Science and Industry museum. It’s in a very interesting area.
The photo below shows the viaduct as it was. In April 2025, Manchester City Council granted planning permission to convert the rest of the viaduct.
