My Earliest Memory

West Kirby war memorial

West Kirby War Memorial photographed yesterday.

To the right of the bottom railings there is a slope leading to a cliff with a ledge halfway up. If you look very, very closely, you’ll see my mobile phone on the ledge just below the vertical section. It gives an idea of the scale. I guess the ledge and the phone are around two feet above the grass.

I have a memory of trying to climb up to where the phone is. Every time I got close, an adult would come and take me away. I know I was young because I remember being smaller than height of the ledge! I remember having to reach up to touch it. I remember being very annoyed, my cousin Alan was allowed to climb up to the memorial, and I wasn’t.

To me, it was a towering cliff.

It was probably in 1957 or possible 1958, when I was a toddler.
